10 am: Medicaid Planning & Elder Law: What Financial Planners Need to Know with Tammy Silvas, Silvas Law
This session gives financial planners a working knowledge of Medicaid planning and elder law issues that regularly intersect with their clients' financial and retirement plans. Topics include current Texas Medicaid eligibility rules, how retirement accounts and other assets are treated, the tools elder law attorneys use to protect a family's resources (Qualified Income Trusts, Medicaid Compliant Annuities, Family Caregiver Agreements, and Special Needs Trusts), and when to bring elder law counsel into a client relationship. As life expectancy rises and long-term care costs continue to climb, an unplanned care event can undo years of careful wealth planning almost overnight. Advisors who understand these fundamentals can spot warning signs earlier, protect the plans they've built for clients, and give families access to strategies that preserve significantly more of the estate than a crisis response allows.
